“Bike Dream” is a little bit of the reason why I named my band Bike Lane. I hope the influence is legible in our work.
I saw Ryan Beatty again last week and this show was as good as the last, which is to say Very Good. What I love about the Ryan Beatty shows is the band; there are two guitarists, two pedalsteel players, a drummer, a bassist, and a piano player, in addition to Ryan, who spends most of the show sitting down with his eyes closed, listening to the incredible musicianship on full display just behind him. I’m especially fond of the playing of the pianist Taylor Mackall, who I first saw play in the Marcus Mumford band at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, where I was also taken aback by the virtuosity of the band. I really delight in seeing these guys play; see them on tour opening for Noah Kahan if you get the chance.
I ordered the Toro y Moi beanie (shame emoji).
Neil Young hive! Our king is risen!!!!!!!
I am finding out in new and horrible turns that I like Drake songs. I would not go so far as to say that I’m a Drake fan, because that would be a whole thing that I’m not ready to claim. But I like this song, and I think that “Ventura Beach” might be my most played song this year, so I need to prepare myself and everyone who trusts me as credible for that.
I found this Summer Walker song looking for music to fill out my “eternal sunshine” by Ariana Grande playlist. I feel like she’s a really underrated person in the R&B space, especially this 2018 record. “Baby” off this same record is also a really standout track.
I was talking with someone last night at the Substack event about Dijon and then we got separated, as you do at parties, and we never got to finish our conversation about Dijon, one of the most exciting new artists making music right now. Sir, if you’re reading this please DM me so we can keep talking about Dijon.
I made everybody loves u for the Substack event and when this song came on, I felt the energy shift a little. The really frenetic, buzzy guitars paired with the very subdued vocals are signature feeble little horse, who I’d love to see perform sometime soon.
Currently trending in my brain: the vegan beef bulgogi from Trader Joes, low ABV menus at bars, lifelong learning (just registered for another community college class), kitten heels with jeans, having remote bookclub with my friends, taking walks in the sun, this Vietnamese coffee perfume (thank you Viv Chen), seeing neighborhood cats out on my runs, the jasmine bush outside my bathroom window, The Flowered Dress, finding new art on wikiart.org, cold emailing, github, swimming in the afternoons, open hours at my ceramics studio, sending postcards to my friends just to say hi.
