I first heard this song on a mix someone made me when I was 12, and didn’t think much of it. Earlier this week I was listening to the new Omar Apollo single and thinking, wow, what a great sample that I know but don’t know. Upon realizing it was this Ivy song, I’ve been completely obsessed with this sound and realized how much it’s shaped modern music. I was recently having a conversation with my partner about samples and interpolations—at what point are we just stealing, when is credit a step too far, are the kids aware of the original? While I think a lot of people won’t necessarily realize that this Omar Apollo song contains a blatant reference to “Edge of the Ocean”, I really do think that it’s cool to even imagine Omar Apollo liking this song enough to use it as the base of his music, and their legacy lives on in him, as it does in every artist that notes them as an influence—including me.
