I am completely obsessed with the debut waterbaby album. “If you need someone to remember you / Just know I remember it all.” I’m also obsessed with the Harvest Moon (1992) callback in the album art, which I can’t find any writing about anywhere. Am I insane? This is 100% Harvest Moon.
I’m also curious if the Harvest Moon reference isn’t translating because Black women fight such an uphill battle against being automatically categorized as R&B, neo-soul, etc. (see this very important Rachel Chinouriri PSA). Are people potentially not even considering Neil Young as an inspiration for this record, even though it so clearly sounds like him too? This playlist kind of runs with that theme—see the Neil Young track below.
