I’ve been seeing lots of posts about the best songs of 2022 so far, so I decided to throw one together. Are we already halfway through the year? Where did the spring go? Why have so many bad things happened and yet time feels like it’s not passing at all?
Right now, I believe I am telling the truth when I say that “Twenty Dried Chilies” by Babehoven is the best song released in 2022 so far. It’s still got such a hold on me, it would be disingenuous to rank it any lower. I wrote about this song in this issue of the main newsletter, and my statements remain true: this song hurts!
“Promise Is a Pendulum” is my favorite new song off the new Big Thief, which is possibly my favorite album of the year. I’m still finding my way around this record’s many twists and turns, piled on top of one another like soft layers of something earthen and warm. It’s rooted in nature somehow, much like my favorite record of 2020, Squirrel Flower’s I Was Born Swimming. This lyric breaks me:
