When I was in high school, I'd go see Antonoff and Nigro in their bands--Steel Train and As Tall As Lions, respectively--playing dive bars with a couple dozen people in attendance. It's still hard for me to grasp that those same guys are now key players in the shaping of mainstream pop music. For what it's worth, I always preferred Nigro's work and still do. Some of the songs that he's written with The Aces are top-notch.
I had some friends who loved them, but they were never really my thing. The last time I saw them, though, they were opening for The Format, whose singer was Nate Ruess, who would form fun. with Antonoff. I've got to believe that tour was a big part of the reason that they started working together, which is fun for me in retrospect.

i love his work with the aces! crazy that they were that small... i've heard steel train was not that good though?

i had no idea that nate ruess was the lead singer of the format... i love that band
They're so great. Both Dog Problems and Interventions & Lullabies are all-timers for me.
